Use your local Toy Library. They lend out toys for a minimal fee or for free. There are several in Edinburgh and the Lothians. For details contact the National Association of Toy and Leisure Libraries:

Broken electrical or battery operated toys can be placed into the electrical containers at your local Community Recycling Centre. See COMMUNITY RECYCLING CENTRES.

Use rechargeable batteries in battery operated toys and games.

Buy wind-up toys instead of battery operated toys.
